Concrete Footing: Retaining Wall Project

High quality concrete building footings are an essential aspect of foundation construction, helping to ensure your structure is safe, stable and reliable. Proper construction of footings is a practical and needed measure for a range of load bearing projects including, but not limited to, retaining wall construction.

Our retaining wall footing systems offer an underground concrete support structure that assists in the even distribution of weight from your load bearing walls into the soil below. Without proper construction of ground level concrete footings, your retaining wall could be weak, leading to cracks, instability and possible collapse under the pressure of soil conditions.

What Is A Retaining Wall?

Retaining walls are structures designed to help with restraining soil behind them. Typically, they’re used to level out uneven ground in sloped landscapes, preventing the interference of soil erosion or being used to support efforts in on-site construction projects. Due to soil‘s weight, they must be properly reinforced to ensure long-term stability.

Importance of Concrete Footings in Retaining Wall Stability

Footings play a vital role in retaining wall stability, as they anchor it against high winds, protect it from expansive soil moisture and help distribute its weight across uneven ground. Adequate footing design and construction ensure a wall‘s stability, preventing it from becoming misaligned with ground surfaces or floors that have become uneven due to soil movement. Without well-designed footings, the structural integrity of a retaining wall can be compromised, leading to costly repairs and potential safety hazards.

Soil Conditions and Footing Design

Soil conditions play a critical role in footing design, as different types of soil offer varying levels of stability and drainage. Footings founded on bedrock settle the least, providing a solid and stable base for the structure. Sandy soil, while offering good drainage, settles quickly and evenly, making it suitable for certain types of footings. Clay soil, on the other hand, is notoriously volatile and can cause significant problems due to its tendency to expand with moisture changes.
