First things first, what do you need to get started with your project:
Shovel
Saw
Hammer
Plywood stakes
Flexible hardboard or rigid plywood
Wood float
Edging tool
Step by steps guide on how to get started;
1 . Create you design
The design of your concrete garden edge is crucial, as you will need to know the amount of concrete necessary. We recommend using a rope of your garden hose to map out the shape of your garden edging before you start digging.
2. Dig a small trench
Once you are happy with your design, start digging. Make sure you dig deep enough and compact the soil to make sure there is a solid base for the concrete.
3. Prepare a framework
We recommend creating a little framework in your trench for the concrete. If you have a curved design, use a flexible hardboard, otherwise use rigid plywood to ensure a straight framework. You can use plywood stakes to attach the borders and improve the stability.
4. Mix your concrete
You can either mix your own concrete or you can save yourself the hassle and get Concrete Taxi to deliver and mix your concrete. We are able to batch up the exact strength and amount of concrete for your project. If you are unsure about whether to mix your own, find some more information on the difference here. 5. Pouring and shaping
Once your concrete is mixed, pour it into the framework of your garden edging. Make sure the batch is evenly distributed and smooth out the surface using the wood float. Don’t forget to shape the edges using your concrete edging tool.
6. Cure and coat
Your concrete will be dry to touch after 24 hours but it won’t be fully cured for another 28 days. We recommend waiting at least three days before removing the framework, to ensure you don’t damage the edging. Seal your concrete garden edging to improve its durability, depending on the sealant you use, apply it as per the instructions.
